Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins historic New Zealand visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Auckland on Friday, marking the first visit by an Indian head of government to New Zealand in forty years. Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower lit up in the vibrant colours of the Indian tricolour to celebrate this arrival. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared these visuals, highlighting the deep friendship between the two partners. This diplomatic milestone follows a successful summit in Australia, signaling India's expanding footprint in the Indo-Pacific region. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally welcomed the Indian leader at the airport, setting an optimistic tone for upcoming discussions.

Economic Growth and Defence Co-operation

Bilateral discussions between the two leaders will focus on expanding trade, commerce, and security partnerships. Relations have progressed rapidly since both nations signed a significant Free Trade Agreement in April 2026.
