Sambalpur, July 31: The Hirakud Dam authorities on Friday opened 10 additional sluice gates, taking the total number of open gates to 12, as the reservoir's water level continued to rise following increased inflow from the upper catchment areas.

According to officials, the reservoir's water level stood at 622.97 feet, prompting the authorities to gradually increase the discharge of floodwater. The released water is flowing downstream through the Mahanadi River, and more gates may be opened if the inflow continues to increase.

The decision to open additional gates was taken after a significant rise in water entering the reservoir. Water Resources Department officials said the situation is being monitored round-the-clock to ensure safe reservoir operations while maintaining downstream river conditions.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in the lower reaches of the Mahanadi has shown signs of gradual improvement. River discharge is being closely monitored at key locations, including Mundali in Cuttack, where officials are keeping a watch on water levels and flow patterns.

The Water Resources Department has advised residents living in low-lying areas along the Mahanadi basin to remain alert as the released water continues to move downstream. District administrations have also been asked to maintain vigilance and take precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.

Officials said reservoir operations will continue to be reviewed based on inflow and downstream conditions, and additional sluice gates may be opened if required to regulate the rising water level safely.
