ZEE5 removes Diljit Dosanjh film globally following censorship pressure

Diljit Dosanjh's controversial film Satluj is no longer available to international audiences on ZEE5. Director Honey Trehan confirmed this global takedown just days after the Indian government ordered the streaming platform to remove the movie domestically. Social media users quickly noticed the sudden disappearance outside India, sparking fresh debates about artistic freedom and digital regulation.

Historical records show the 1990s counter-insurgency operations in Punjab remain highly sensitive for Indian authorities today, complicating any artistic portrayal of that turbulent era. This historical sensitivity likely fueled the initial domestic ban. The film had finally premiered last Friday after four years of delays, only to vanish less than 48 hours later.

Censorship hurdles explained

Government officials state that creators initially submitted the project for theatrical certification in 2022 under the title Punjab 95. The Central Board of Film Certification suggested 127 cuts, which the filmmakers firmly refused to implement. Instead, they opted for a direct digital release with a new name, bypassing traditional cinema regulations. When authorities noticed this alternative strategy, they directed the streaming service to remove the content, citing specific security concerns and online intermediary guidelines.

Core story behind the controversy

Viewers who managed to watch the brief broadcast saw a story revolving around human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. His factual investigations brought international attention to alleged illegal cremations during intense regional conflicts. The narrative captures this dark period, featuring strong performances from Suvinder Vicky and Arjun Rampal alongside Dosanjh. Trehan previously mentioned he never actually knew exactly who opposed the project, as all communications came through legal representatives.

Public reaction and unintended consequences

Online communities point out that trying to suppress the release has only fueled greater public curiosity. Several commentators noted that users who had never heard of the project are now actively searching for it. Due to the sudden digital block, unauthorized pirated copies are circulating widely across various messaging groups and alternative platforms. Co-producer Ronnie Screwvala's team hopes the film will return to official channels eventually.
