Las Vegas, Ap 17: The creators of Toy Story 5 debuted footage from the highly anticipated film at CinemaCon on Thursday. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, the voices of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, took the stage to present the preview.
One of the revealed scenes shows the toys struggling to compete for attention as their owner, Bonnie (Scarlett Spears), favors Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee), a frog-themed tablet that lets her create chat groups and play interactive games for hours. This shift threatens the relevance of familiar favorites like Sporky, Rex, Hamm, Bo Peep, and the other classic toys.
To counter Bonnie’s screen obsession, the toys send an SOS to Woody, who appears in a second scene looking paunchier and balder, dressed in a poncho reminiscent of a Clint Eastwood Western. His arrival, however, sparks tension with Buzz, who feels sidelined, setting the stage for a playful rivalry over who will save the day, Variety reported.
Hanks and Allen, reflecting on the franchise’s 30-year history, shared lighthearted comments during the Las Vegas presentation. “We looked at a video of us doing the first one—we look like our grandchildren,” Allen joked, while Hanks remarked that he felt like he was “in junior high school” watching the behind-the-scenes footage.
The film also features Joan Cusack, Greta Lee, Tony Hale, and Conan O’Brien, and is directed by Andrew Stanton, known for WALL-E and Finding Nemo.
Earlier this year, a trailer set up the film’s central conflict: Bonnie’s fascination with the high-tech Lilypad tablet. Rather than painting technology as a simple villain, the story explores an existential challenge for toys confronting the threat of obsolescence.
The film introduces several new characters, including Atlas, a cheerful GPS hippo voiced by Craig Robinson; Snappy, an excitable camera toy voiced by Shelby Rabara; and Smarty Pants, a toilet-training tech toy voiced by Conan O’Brien.
Toy Story 5 is scheduled for release in the United States on June 19.
