Cuttack, May 11: The new edition of the Class VII literature textbook has come under severe criticism for containing significant errors in the life and struggle of martyr freedom fighter Madho Singh. Mistakes range from incorrect details about his birthplace to misrepresentation of his movements during battles with the British. Most notably, the date of his execution has also been erroneously recorded.
The publication has sparked outrage among historians, educators, and social organizations in Odisha. Padma Shri Haladhar Nag and the Sahid Kunjal Singh Club have strongly condemned the inaccuracies, calling them disrespect to the sacrifices of the great freedom fighter. They have formally written to the State Education Minister Nityananda Gond and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, demanding immediate correction of the textbook.
“Presenting such incorrect information to students not only misguides them but also dishonors the legacy of our brave martyrs,” said Haladhar Nag. Educationalists and cultural leaders emphasize that accurate historical representation is vital for preserving the cultural identity and pride of Odisha.
The controversy has ignited statewide discussion on the importance of careful vetting of educational content, ensuring that students learn the true stories of the state’s heroes without distortion.
