Elephant Herd causes ruckus and damage in Champua

Keonjhar, Jan 1, 2026: A herd of 25 elephants continues to wreak havoc in the Champua Range of Keonjhar district, causing significant damage to crops and properties. The elephants have been seen moving towards villages, destroying houses, and creating panic among the locals.

The herd wreaked havoc in the villages of Bala and Manoharpur, breaking down doors and consuming rice and paddy from three houses. Fortunately, the families living in the affected homes were able to escape the attacks, as they were inside their houses at the time.

In addition to the damage to homes, the elephants have destroyed large swathes of crops in the area, particularly paddy fields. The destruction of agricultural land has left farmers facing heavy losses.

The Forest Department is keeping a close watch on the herd's movement, as it has caused major losses in both agricultural fields and property. The department is working on strategies to ward off the elephants back into their natural habitat to prevent further damage. Local authorities and residents are urging caution, as the elephants continue to roam in the area, adding to the tension in the region.

The authorities have also appealed to the public to stay alert and report any sightings of the herd to help manage the situation and reduce the risks to human lives and property.
