Berhampur, July 14: An elderly woman was allegedly duped of ₹32 lakh after cyber fraudsters lured her with a fake ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)’ lottery prize. The victim has lodged a complaint with the Berhampur Cyber and Economic Offences Police Station.
According to the complaint, the woman received a phone call from a person claiming to be a representative of the popular television game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. The caller informed her that she had won a lottery and asked her a few routine questions before instructing her to share certain personal and banking details to claim the prize money.
Trusting the caller, the woman disclosed her bank account details. Soon after, ₹32 lakh was allegedly siphoned off from her account through multiple transactions.
The fraud came to light when the woman visited her bank to inquire about the transactions. Bank officials informed her that she had fallen victim to a cyber scam.
Following her complaint, the Berhampur Cyber and Economic Offences Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Inspector-in-Charge Gayatri Gochhayat said efforts are underway to trace the accused and ascertain the modus operandi behind the fraud.
