New Delhi, AP 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met newly appointed NITI Aayog Full-Time Member Dr. Gobardhan Das on Sunday, praising his personal journey as “very inspiring” and commending his contributions to public health and immunology.
“Every struggle he faced only strengthened his commitment to serve society and alleviate suffering,” the Prime Minister wrote on X, adding that Dr. Das’ scholarship and research will enrich India’s policy-making architecture.
Dr. Das, Director of IISER Bhopal and a renowned molecular scientist with nearly three decades of experience in immunology, infectious diseases, and cell biology, was recently inducted into the national think tank as part of its expanded full-time membership. His appointment comes as NITI Aayog refines India’s long-term economic and social strategies ahead of the 2047 centenary of independence.
Speaking in Kolkata after receiving accolades from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Dr. Das expressed pride for West Bengal. “By making a Bengali a member of NITI Aayog, today is a day of great joy for Bengal. We are very proud,” he said.
Aligning with the Prime Minister’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, Dr. Das emphasized an inclusive development model that bridges high-tech research with grassroots welfare. “We need to take the country much further... not a single citizen of the country should be left behind,” he said.
Dr. Das’ induction is expected to bring a data-driven, research-oriented perspective to NITI Aayog, translating scientific innovation into practical solutions for rural and marginalized communities. His inclusion, alongside senior economist Dr. Ashok Lahiri as Vice Chairperson, gives West Bengal two prominent representatives on the council.
PM Modi also congratulated Dr. Rajiv Gauba, Prof. K.V. Raju, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, and Dr. M. Srinivas on becoming Full-Time Members. Dr. Das’ expertise in science and public health is anticipated to play a key role in shaping India’s inclusive development and policy strategy over the next two decades.
