Bhubaneswar, May 16: A contract killer has been arrested in the sensational murder case of a woman who was allegedly killed a day after her engagement in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district. The accused, identified as Lalu Kumar alias Lalu Yadav, was arrested by Jagatsinghpur Police from Bihar’s Kaimur district.

Police said the victim, Sasmita Das of Kathiapada village under Jagatsinghpur Sadar police limits, was allegedly murdered by her former lover Suryakant Swain with the help of the contract killer. The incident had taken place on April 20, just a day after Sasmita got engaged elsewhere.

According to police, Suryakant allegedly called Sasmita to a moong field near her house, where she was brutally murdered. After committing the crime, both accused had fled the scene.

While police had earlier arrested Suryakant Swain from Jamshedpur, the contract killer had remained absconding. Following a prolonged search, Jagatsinghpur Police finally traced and arrested Lalu Yadav from Bihar on Friday.

The accused underwent medical examination at the Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters Hospital on Saturday and will be produced before the court later in the day. Jagatsinghpur SP is expected to address the media regarding the case.
