Bhubaneswar, May 9: Six more individuals have been arrested in connection with the lynching of 32-year-old GRP constable Saumya Ranjan Swain in Balianta, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The constable was accused of attempting to assault a woman two days ago.
With the latest arrests, the total number of people apprehended in the case has risen to 11, according to a senior police officer.
Earlier, five individuals were taken into custody for allegedly participating in the brutal mob attack that led to Swain’s death.
The incident occurred on May 7, when around 40 people assaulted the constable and another individual, Om Prakash Rout, in the Balianta Police Station area over alleged misconduct toward a woman. Swain was beaten to death in broad daylight, while Rout sustained injuries.
The deceased constable’s father alleged that a police team present at the scene also assaulted his son instead of intervening to save him. The injured victim has reportedly corroborated this claim.
Police have launched an intensified manhunt to identify and apprehend others involved in the attack.
