Cuttack, May 9: In a unique form of protest, members of Subhash Sangathan staged a “Bhiksha Satyagraha” at Badambadi in Cuttack, alleging negligence by the civic administration over the deplorable condition of roads. Protesters, with bandages wrapped around their hands and begging bowls in hand, sought alms symbolically for the Mayor and the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) Commissioner.
The organisation alleged that the Cuttack–Badambadi main road has turned into a death trap due to large potholes. Lakhs of commuters use the busy stretch daily, but the poor condition of the road has reportedly led to several accidents. On May 1, one person lost his life in a pothole-related accident, while several others sustained serious injuries. The protesters claimed that although the potholes were filled overnight after the incident, no sympathy or assistance was extended to the victims.
Subhash Sangathan further alleged that despite crores of rupees being allocated in the CMC’s 2025–26 budget for road repairs, key roads like Badambadi remain in a dangerous condition. The organisation accused the administration of remaining indifferent despite repeated written and verbal appeals.
Speaking on the occasion, Subhash Sangathan president Suresh Mohanty said the symbolic begging protest was launched to collect funds for the Mayor and CMC Commissioner, which would later be handed over to them as a mark of protest.
The organisation demanded immediate repair of all potholes on major roads in Cuttack within seven days. It also sought the release of a white paper detailing expenditure and work undertaken on the road over the past five years. Additionally, the protesters demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family of the deceased victim.
The organisation warned that if the demands are not fulfilled, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days.
