Shreyas Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav as India T20I captain
Shreyas Iyer is officially taking over as India's new T20I captain, stepping in to replace Suryakumar Yadav. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed this crucial roster update on Saturday during a press conference in Mumbai. Tilak Varma steps up to serve as the new vice-captain for the shortest format.
Indian cricket enters a fresh transition phase as selectors look to build a younger core for upcoming global tournaments. Iyer will first lead the national squad during a two-match series against Ireland in Belfast, starting on June 26. Immediately following that, the team travels for a five-match series against England, which kicks off in Chester-le-Street on July 1.
Surprising Exclusions and Young Talent
Suryakumar Yadav recently guided the country to a remarkable T20 World Cup victory on home soil this past March. Despite that incredible triumph, selectors omitted him from the upcoming European tours and the 2026 Asian Games roster. The Asian Games tournament will take place in Japan later this year. In another bold selection move, the committee drafted 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into the senior squad for the Ireland and England games.
Return of Proven Domestic Captain
Fans have not seen Iyer play a T20 international match since December 2023. However, his domestic leadership record speaks volumes about his tactical skills. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL championship in 2024. The following year, he took Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in over a decade. His sharp strategies also helped Mumbai secure the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024. Across 101 IPL games as captain, he maintains a respectable win rate of 54.45 percent.
Looking Ahead to Future Challenges
Many cricket experts felt puzzled by his extended absence from the national T20 setup. He completely missed the 2025 Asia Cup and failed to make the final cut for the recent World Cup squad. He consistently proves himself as a reliable middle-order batsman in franchise leagues. Now, returning to the international fold, he brings vital experience. Selectors clearly trust his ability to manage high-pressure situations, rewarding his consistent domestic success with the highest national responsibility.
