Socceroos advance to knockouts following tense Group D draw
Socceroos secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 following a tough 0-0 draw against Paraguay. Earning the runner-up spot in Group D, Australia relied on heavy possession to control the match in California.
Paraguay chose to defend deeply throughout most of the contest. This allowed Australian midfielders like Jordan Bos, Cristian Volpato, and Aiden O'Neill to push forward aggressively. Early on, O'Neill forced a brilliant save from Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill with a fierce shot. O'Neill ultimately earned Player of the Match honors for his tireless work rate. Despite this constant pressure, clear scoring opportunities remained rare for both teams.
Reaching the knockouts reflects Australia's growing football pedigree, echoing their historic run to the Round of 16 back in 2022. Paraguay made tactical shifts after halftime but could not break the deadlock. Late in the game, Bos almost snatched a win for Australia, but his curled shot missed the far post by inches.
Finishing second in the group sends Australia to Dallas on July 3. They will face the second-place team from Group G. Meanwhile, Paraguay must wait to see if they advance as one of the top third-placed sides.
