Bhitarkanika National Park to remain closed for tourists during crocodile census

Kendrapara, Dec 23: Bhitarkanika National Park will remain closed to tourists from January 8 to January 10, 2026, as a crocodile census will be conducted during this period. The information was shared by Forest Range Officer Bharadraj Gaonkar.

Officials said the census schedule has been finalized keeping in mind the winter season and the Amavasya (new moon) phase, which provides ideal conditions for counting crocodiles. During winter, crocodiles of all age groups are commonly seen basking along riverbanks to absorb heat. Moreover, as Bhitarkanika’s river systems are largely tidal, the post-Amavasya period experiences extended low tides, preventing riverbanks from being submerged and making observation easier.

The conditions allow for effective crocodile counting both during the day and at night. Authorities noted that the movement of tourists often causes crocodiles to retreat from riverbanks into the water, affecting the accuracy of the count. To ensure uninterrupted monitoring, tourist entry will be restricted, and the census will be carried out using special motorboats.

Forest officials further informed that trained experts will be deployed for the exercise. After proper training, dedicated counting teams will be formed to carry out the census across various rivers and creeks within the national park.
