The Government of India has declared Tuesday, 14th April 2026, as a public holiday to mark the birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

On this day, all Central Government Offices, including industrial establishments across the country, will remain closed.

The holiday has been officially announced through an Office Memorandum issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions (Department of Personnel & Training).

Every year on April 14, India observes Ambedkar Jayanti, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, one of the foremost architects of modern India. Born in 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Dr Ambedkar was a jurist, economist, social reformer, and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar Jayanti is not only a celebration of his life but also a tribute to his lifelong struggle for social justice, equality, and human rights.

Why April 14?

Dr Ambedkar’s birthday, April 14, has become a symbolic day for social empowerment and resistance against caste-based discrimination. It is an occasion to reaffirm the constitutional values of liberty, equality, and fraternity that he championed throughout his life.

Historical Significance

Despite facing discrimination in his early life, Dr Ambedkar became the first Dalit to earn a doctorate in economics abroad. He was a graduate of Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and he strongly believed in education as a means of empowerment. As India’s first Law Minister, he led the drafting of the Constitution, ensuring civil liberties and affirmative action provisions for historically disadvantaged communities.

Celebrations across India

Ambedkar Jayanti is observed as a public holiday in many Indian states. It is marked by processions, seminars, and cultural events. In Delhi, the Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has declared April 14 a public holiday in all government offices and PSUs under the National Capital Territory. On this day, statues of Dr Ambedkar are decorated with garlands, and his contributions are remembered through speeches and public discussions.

For Dalit communities, Ambedkar Jayanti holds deep emotional and political significance, serving as a reminder of the ongoing fight against caste-based inequalities and an inspiration for social and economic reforms.

Global observance

Ambedkar Jayanti, also known as Bhim Jayanti, is celebrated internationally in countries with a significant Indian diaspora, including the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada, highlighting Dr Ambedkar’s global influence as a champion of human rights and social justice.
