Bhubaneswar, Mar 31: As the state gears up to celebrate Utkal Divas on April 1, the spirit of pride and belonging is visible not only in government offices and schools but also on the busy streets, markets and neighbourhoods across Odisha. For many ordinary citizens, the day is more than a ceremonial observance- it is an emotional reminder of their identity, culture and roots.
From street vendors to students and elderly residents who have witnessed the state’s transformation over decades, people shared what Utkal Divas means to them and how Odisha has changed over the years.
In the bustling markets of Bhubaneswar, street vendors said Utkal Divas is a moment of pride that connects them with the history of the state.
Ramesh Nayak, who runs a tea stall near a busy road, said the day reminds him of Odisha’s rich traditions.
“On Utkal Divas, we feel proud to be Odia. Even though we are busy earning our livelihood, we always remember that our state has a unique culture and history,” he said.
Another vendor selling fruits nearby echoed similar sentiments too.
“People come from different places to work here, but Odisha welcomes everyone. This day reminds us of our unity and identity,” he said.
Students also expressed excitement as educational institutions organise cultural programmes and awareness activities to mark the occasion.
A college student in Bhubaneswar said Utkal Divas is not just about remembering history but also thinking about the future of the state.
“We learn about how Odisha was formed and the struggles behind it. It inspires us to work for the development of our state,” she said.
School students said they enjoy participating in traditional dance, song and essay competitions during the celebrations. Many of them emphasised the importance of preserving the Odia language and heritage.
For elderly residents who have lived through major changes in the state, Utkal Divas carries deep emotional value. They remember how Odisha has evolved over the years in terms of infrastructure, education and opportunities. An 82-year-old resident from Cuttack said he has witnessed remarkable transformation since his childhood.
“In earlier days, development was limited and many areas lacked basic facilities. Today, the state has progressed a lot in education, roads and industries. Utkal Divas reminds us how far we have come,” he said.
Another senior citizen from Puri said the younger generation should learn about the history behind the formation of Odisha.
“This day is not only for celebration but also for remembering the leaders and people who fought to create our state,” he said.
Across towns and villages, people are preparing for rallies, cultural programmes and community events to celebrate the occasion. Many residents said the festival strengthens their sense of belonging and pride in their heritage.
For the common people, Utkal Divas is ultimately about identity-a reminder that despite differences in profession or background, they are united by a shared culture and history.
As one young resident summed up, “Utkal Divas means love for our land. Ama Odisha, Ama Garba our Odisha, our pride.”
