Mumbai, October 17: Bollywood actor Imran Khan has approached the Bombay High Court challenging a ‘Leave India Notice’ (LIN) issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), directing him to leave the country by October 28 over alleged violations of immigration laws.

The notice was issued following the actor’s participation in a protest in Mumbai, where he was detained by police last week. Reports state that Khan holds an American passport. Authorities have reportedly initiated action against him under Sections 29 and 7 of the Immigration Act, alleging that he participated in the demonstration despite not being an Indian citizen.

Following his detention, Khan shared a photograph on social media that appeared to show him sitting inside a police van. He captioned the post, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”

Speaking to the media, the actor said he had attended the protest as a citizen of Mumbai and was not there to press any specific demands. He also questioned restrictions on freedom of movement and expressed concerns over the suppression of people’s voices.

According to his lawyer, Khan intends to challenge the notice before the Bombay High Court, with an appeal expected to be filed next week. Further details regarding the legal grounds of the challenge are awaited.

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya demanded Khan’s immediate arrest and deportation over his participation in the protest. Somaiya alleged that the actor had violated Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) provisions and visa conditions by taking part in what he described as an illegal political agitation.

Somaiya said he had submitted evidence to the police concerning Khan’s speeches during the demonstration and his earlier remarks. He also urged the authorities to take immediate action, accusing the actor of misusing his OCI status.

“The citizens of India cannot tolerate the political extremism that Imran Khan has been displaying during his recent stay in the country. He is an American citizen holding an OCI card, yet he has attempted to misuse his status. Today, we submitted all proofs and evidence to the police regarding his conduct—specifically the speeches he delivered during the protest and his earlier comments,” Somaiya said.

The matter is now set to move before the Bombay High Court, where Khan is expected to challenge the notice directing him to leave India by October 28.
