Impersonator arrested for duping NRI of Rs 1.25 crore

Bhubaneswar, Dec 4: The Shree Lingaraj police today arrested a 42-year-old impersonator who had allegedly cheated an NRI to the tune of Rs 1.25 crore by posing as a charted accountant. Police today arrested the accused identified as Prajna Prakash Nayak who also impersonated as authorized person of the Income Tax department. Police have also seized a Land Rover vehicle from the accused. Police said that the accused claimed to own a company which is involved in faceless assessment work approved by Central Board of Direct Taxes. “Besides he impersonated as close relative of senior bureaucrats and requested the complainant to take over his share of him in the above scheme. He also assured that he would provide assistance to the complainant with regard to getting empanelment for the above mentioned scheme under CBDT,” said a police official. The accused later took the money in several instalments. “The accused later informed that the entire work related to Faceless Assessment Scheme, 2020 has been kept in abeyance till December because of technical deficiency in services provided by the operator. The victim, however, could know that it was a fake company. The victim subsequently lodged a police complaint,” added the police official.
