IMD issues red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad as heavy rain disrupts traffic

Mumbai, Sept 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad as the city was drenched in heavy rainfall on Monday morning. The downpour caused severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas, leading to significant traffic slowdowns during the office rush hour.

King’s Circle and Matunga market were among the worst-hit areas, with water accumulation on the roads severely disrupting traffic. The overnight and morning showers also caused water to collect on railway tracks at Kurla station on the Central Railway route and Bandra on the Western Railway network, leading to delays in local train services.

The heavy rain, which started around midnight, was accompanied by lightning and thunder, continuing into the morning and inundating several parts of the city, including King’s Circle. Water-filled potholes added to the chaos on the roads, making travel conditions even worse.

The IMD reported that from 8:30 am on Sunday to 5:30 am on Monday, Colaba recorded the highest rainfall at 88.2 mm, followed by Bandra with 82 mm and Byculla at 73 mm. Mahul Tata Power Station received 70.5 mm, while Juhu reported 45 mm. Santacruz and Mahalaxmi saw relatively lower rainfall at 36.6 mm and 36.5 mm, respectively.

Despite the heavy rainfall, the IMD's forecast for September 16 to 18 predicts only moderate showers, with no further alerts issued at this time.
