IMD forecasts rainfall across Odisha till September 4

Bhubaneswar, August 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday predicted continuous rainfall across Odisha for the next seven days, with a low-pressure system over central Chhattisgarh expected to drive widespread showers and thunderstorms.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, light to moderate rain or thundershowers will persist through the week, accompanied by yellow warnings for lightning, gusty winds, and isolated heavy rainfall in several districts.

The low-pressure system, which developed over south Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh, has now shifted to central Chhattisgarh. An associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level is tilting southwestwards, influencing the monsoon trough that stretches from Sri Ganganagar to the Bay of Bengal.

Day-wise forecast and warnings:

  • Till Aug 29: Light to moderate rain in many areas. Yellow alerts for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) across coastal, northern, and southern districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and others.
  • Aug 29–30: Similar conditions with alerts confined mainly to coastal and southern districts.
  • Aug 30–31: Rain at several places. Thunderstorm warnings extend to coastal, northern, and southern districts.
  • Aug 31–Sep 1: Widespread rainfall, with heavy showers predicted in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
  • Sep 1–2: Heavy rainfall is likely in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh.
  • Sep 2–4: Continued rain across Odisha with focus on heavy rainfall in northern districts.

The extended outlook for September 4–7 suggests no major change in weather conditions.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea for the next 24 hours as squally weather with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, is expected over the west-central and north Bay of Bengal. The sea condition will remain moderate to rough.
