ILS, Bhubaneswar among 5 institutions to carry out genome sequences of COVID-19

Bhubaneswar, Dec 23: In the wake of the appearance of a mutated strain of SARS-CoV-2 (N501Y) from the United Kingdom (UK), Govt of India has decided to initiate intense screening of all incoming passengers from the UK to prevent spread of the mutated virus in India. All incoming passengers will be subjected to RTPCR test followed by genome sequencing of all positive samples. A communication from Prof. Balram Bhargava, Secretary, Department of Health Research& DG, ICMR to this effect has been sent to all state Chief Secretaries & Secretaries (Health). The communication gives the guidelines for sample collection, transport and analysis. As per the guidelines, all thepassengers will be subjected to RTPCR test for SARS-CoV-2 at the point of entry.The samples of patients who test positive for SARS-CoV-2will be subjected to sequencing of the Sgene or whole genome in 5 designated research centers in the country. Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad; National Institute of Virology Pune and InStem-NCBS, Bangalore are the institutions selected for genome sequencing
