Berhampur, Aug 1: High tides swept away six houses of Podempeta village in Ganjam block on Sunday. No causalities have been reported as these were vacant houses. The village was about half a kilometre from the sea but in the last two years, the sea has been gobbling up the village now. Over 40 families were living in the Podempeta village and now only seven families are there. The district administration has rehabilitated the residents near Arunpur, besides the seven families, as the sea has been eating away the land and touching the habitation for the unusual rise of sea water, said a senior official. Not only Podempeta, its nearby Argipalli village is also facing sea encroachment. The vilage was about 1200 metres from the sea but in the last five years, the sea has been gobbling up the village which is now just 100 metres from the sea.
