Keonjhar, Nov 7: Standing paddy crops have been damaged by a herd of 13 wild elephants at Jadipada under Keonjhar Sadar range in the district today.
The herd of elephants entered Jadipada from a nearby reserved forest in the afternoon on Sunday and damaged paddy.
Though farmers who were guarding the crop burst crackers to chase the elephants, the herd continued the destruction.
“The wild elephants have been damaging paddy since the transplantation of paddy seedlings. The standing paddy crops were ready for harvest. Now, I have incurred a huge loss,” said a farmer.
The elephant menace is on the rise in several areas of the district.
The villagers have urged the administration to chalk a permanent program to check the elephant menace.
