
Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: Odisha is likely to experience heavy rainfall over the next four days following the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather system, which developed around 8:30 AM, is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours and move towards the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coastlines.
It is likely to move west –northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during the subsequent 24 hours and cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around the forenoon of 19th Aug 2025, the IMD added.
Rainfall forecast and alerts
As the system progresses, widespread rainfall is expected across many districts of Odisha. Several regions have already started receiving showers, and rainfall intensity is predicted to increase over the next 48 hours.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for 24 districts today, with rainfall ranging between 7 and 11 centimeters. A more serious Orange Alert has been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri districts for Monday, forecasting very heavy rainfall. On August 19, Koraput and Kalahandi will remain under Orange Alert, while other parts of the state may continue to experience significant rainfall.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea between August 18 and 20, as rough sea conditions are expected. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas—especially low-lying regions—to remain alert, as prolonged rainfall may disrupt daily life and cause waterlogging.
