Heavy rain likely in Southern Odisha on Saturday; Weather to improve by September 30

Bhubaneswar, Sept 27: Southern Odisha is expected to witness widespread rainfall on Saturday, with very heavy showers likely in Nabarangpur district, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, and Nuapada may experience heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph.

The IMD reports that a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression this afternoon. It is expected to cross the southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coasts by Saturday morning (Sept 27).

As of this report, the system is located about 60 km from Puri, 130 km from Gopalpur, and 230 km from Paradip.

Rainfall is also likely over Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh districts on Saturday, with chances of thunderstorms. Scattered rain may occur in a few places across both coastal and interior Odisha.

On Sunday (Sept 28), isolated thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in parts of northern and southern Odisha.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) has forecast improved weather conditions in the state from the afternoon of September 27 through September 30, with rainfall activity expected to decrease and overall conditions to remain fair.

However, CEC Director Dr. Sarat Sahu has indicated the potential formation of a cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal around September 30.
