Healthcare in Odisha gets a push with new medical colleges and expanded faculty

Bhubaneswar, Sep 18:  In a major stride toward enhancing healthcare infrastructure and medical education in Odisha, the State Government has undertaken a significant recruitment drive and operationalized two new Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals in 2025.

These initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in bridging the gap in healthcare access and improving the quality of medical education and clinical services across the state.

The newly functional Government Medical College & Hospital, Phulbani (Kandhamal district) and Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital, Talcher (Angul district) have taken Odisha’s tally of Government Medical Colleges from 12 to 14. This comes close on the heels of the successful operationalization of the Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College & Hospital, Jajpur in 2024.

To further support the growing network of medical institutions, the Government has appointed a total of 98 Assistant Professors, including 91 in 23 broad specialty disciplines and 7 in 6 superspecialty disciplines. These appointments span across multiple medical colleges and hospitals in Odisha:

  • SCB MCH, Cuttack: 15 specialists, 4 super specialists
  • MKCG MCH, Berhampur: 19 specialists, 3 super specialists
  • PRM MCH, Baripada: 6 specialists
  • SLN MCH, Koraput: 1 specialist
  • FMMCH, Balesore: 6 specialists
  • BB MCH, Balangir: 1 specialist
  • SJMCH, Puri: 2 specialists
  • Govt MCH, Sundargarh: 6 specialists
  • DD MCH, Keonjhar: 5 specialists
  • SRM MCH, Bhawanipatna: 7 specialists
  • MJK MCH, Jajpur: 2 specialists
  • PMP MCH, Talcher: 8 specialists
  • Govt MCH, Phulbani: 5 specialists
  • PGIMER and Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar: 8 specialists

Additionally, 38 Professors and 27 Associate Professors have been promoted through departmental processes, ensuring academic leadership and continuity in these institutions.

At the Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC), Cuttack, a premier tertiary care institution, the faculty strength has been bolstered with 10 new Assistant Professors in super specialty disciplines such as Surgical Oncology, Gynaecological Oncology, Head & Neck Surgery, Medical Oncology, and Uro-Oncology. Furthermore, one Professor and two Associate Professors have been promoted within the Institute.
