Jajpur, April 21: A shocking incident of alleged student abuse has emerged from Saruabilla Upper Primary School under the Kaliapani cluster in Sukinda block of Odisha’s Jajpur district, triggering widespread outrage.
According to reports, the incident occurred on April 18, when the headmaster allegedly punished students by placing stinging nettle-a plant known to cause severe itching and irritation on contact—inside their pants. The affected students reportedly suffered intense discomfort and distress.
The matter came to light after students informed their families, prompting angry parents to rush to the school, confront the headmaster, and stage protests. A formal complaint was subsequently lodged at Kaliapani police station.
Local representatives, including the sarpanch and members of the School Management Committee, intervened in the matter. The accused headmaster reportedly admitted to the act, issued a written apology, and assured that such behaviour would not be repeated. The issue was initially resolved at the local level.
However, taking serious note of the incident, the District Education Officer ordered an inquiry. Following the probe, the Sukinda Block Education Officer placed the headmaster under suspension.
During the suspension period, his salary will be withheld. He has been barred from attending school and office duties and has been directed to report to the office daily.
