As temperatures soar across the country, staying hydrated and healthy becomes a top priority

As temperatures soar across the country, staying hydrated and healthy becomes a top priority. Among the many seasonal fruits that provide natural relief from the summer heat, the humble ice apple, also known as 'Tala', has emerged as a refreshing and nutritious favourite.

Native to the Indian subcontinent and derived from the Palmyra palm, the ice apple resembles a translucent jelly filled with sweet water. Its subtle taste and high water content make it an ideal summer fruit, especially in regions like Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, where it is commonly found in local markets during the hotter months.

A natural coolant

One of the primary benefits of ice apple is its natural cooling effect on the body. "It helps maintain body temperature and prevents dehydration," says Dr. Anjali Rath, a Bhubaneswar-based nutritionist. "Ice apple contains around 87% water, making it an excellent hydrating agent for the body during extreme heat."

Nutritional Powerhouse

Despite its delicate flavour, ice apple is packed with essential nutrients. It is a rich source of vitamins A, C, and B-complex, as well as minerals like potassium, calcium, and iron. These nutrients help improve digestion, boost immunity, and maintain electrolyte balance, key to preventing heat strokes and fatigue during summer.

Gentle on the stomach

Unlike other summer fruits that may be too acidic or heavy for some people, ice apple is known for its soothing properties. It is often recommended for people with digestive issues, as it helps relieve constipation and promotes gut health. Its fibre content aids in smooth bowel movement without irritating the stomach lining.

Low in calories, high in benefits

For those looking to maintain or lose weight during summer, ice apple offers a guilt-free indulgence. With just 43 calories per 100 grams, it serves as a light and filling snack that doesn’t compromise on nutrition.

A traditional summer remedy

For generations, ice apple has been used in traditional medicine to treat issues like skin rashes, stomach ulcers, and even prickly heat. Many street vendors serve it chilled or with a sprinkle of black salt and lemon juice, enhancing both its flavour and health benefits.

As summer continues to blaze, incorporating natural fruits like ice apple into daily diets can go a long way in staying cool, hydrated, and energised. Simple, wholesome, and rooted in tradition, this seasonal superfruit is a sweet reminder of nature’s way of taking care of us.
