Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was born on 2 October 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat to Putlibay and Karamchand Gandhi, preached Ahimsa (non-violence) and peace. He opposed the ancient and inviolable caste system, thereby promoting equality for all. His teachings and ideology of peace traveled the world and made Gandhi a household name during India's struggle for freedom. So much so that Indian Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore even awarded him the title Mahatma. Mahatma Gandhi's unique teachings and practices of Ahimsa and Satyagra convinced hundreds and thousands of Indians, united them and inspired them to fight nonviolently for freedom against the British Raj. In 1930 he led the famous Dundee March and in 1942 founded the Out India movement against British rule in India.
