GST 2.0 Simplified: New rates to take effect on Navratri, says PM Modi

New Delhi, September 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the latest GST reforms as a major boost for the nation's growth, calling GST 2.0 a "double dose" of support for India's future. The Prime Minister's remarks came a day after the GST Council approved sweeping changes to the complex Goods and Services Tax (GST) system.

Speaking during an interaction with National Teacher Awardees, Modi emphasized that the reform adds five new "gems" (panch ratna) to India's vibrant economy, making GST simpler and more accessible. He also confirmed that the new GST rates of 5% and 18% will be effective from the first day of Navratri.

"GST 2.0 is designed as a powerful catalyst for national growth. These reforms are intended to propel India into the next phase of progress in the 21st century," said Modi.

Highlighting the significance of timely reforms, he added, "Without these changes, we cannot position India where it rightfully belongs in the global landscape. As I mentioned on August 15 from the Red Fort, next-generation reforms are essential to make India self-reliant. I also promised a 'double blast' of happiness before Diwali and Chhath Puja."

The Prime Minister contrasted the current government's approach to that of the previous Congress regime, noting that basic household goods were heavily taxed under the former's policies. The BJP, he said, has worked to address these issues to ease the financial burden on the common man.
