Bhubaneswar, Nov 16: A civil society group has urged Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal to take steps to cancel the lease of bauxite mine granted to Hindalco Industries to save the life and dignity of tribal people living around Mali Parvat of Koraput district. The civil society group comprising Rabi Das, Prafulla Samantara, Debranjan and Biswapriya Kanungo also requested to cancel the forthcoming public hearing scheduled on November 22 as people are living under fear of repression. A public hearing was held on September 22 this year for granting the mining lease. In the concerned public hearing, the district administration and the police tried to suppress the voices of the tribals by arresting number of villagers, they said. The district administration has cancelled the public hearing citing law and order problem. There are four Gram Panchayats and 18 villages surrounding Mali Parvat who opposed to the mining activities. Tribal people surrounding the Mali Parvat are living happily because of the agriculture activities throughout the year, they said.
