Gopalpur Gang Rape Case: NHRC takes cognizance, seeks report from Odisha Govt and DGP

Bhubaneswar/ New Delhi, June 23: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports concerning the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old college student at Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 15, when the victim visited the beach with a male friend to celebrate a festival. According to media accounts, a group of nearly ten individuals allegedly confronted the duo, overpowered the young man, and sexually assaulted the woman.

In response, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Odisha, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission has asked for updates on the status of the police investigation, the survivor’s medical condition, and any steps taken by the state government in terms of rehabilitation, counselling, or compensation.

Reports dated June 16, 2025, confirm that the survivor underwent a medical examination at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Police authorities have detained seven individuals in connection with the case so far.

Emphasising the need for accountability and justice, the NHRC stated that such grave violations of human rights must be met with swift and decisive action from law enforcement.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has publicly condemned the incident, assuring strict punishment for all those involved. The Chief Minister’s Office issued a statement pledging that no perpetrator would be spared under the law.
