Goods train hits herd of elephants in Odisha’s Keonjhar:3 pachyderms including 2 calves critical

Keonjhar, May 19: At least three elephants including two calves have been critical after a goods train hit a herd of elephants in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Thursday. The mishap took place at late night on the Bansapani-Juridi railway line near the Behera hutting in Joda. Sources said, a herd of over 19 elephants were passing the Baitarani(A) reserve forest. After pacing few kilometers the elephants were crossing the railway at the Behera hutting. Meanwhile, a goods train hit the herd all of a sudden. As a result, an adult jumbo and two calves became critical after the train struck the pachyderms violently. Being informed, Keonjhar forest officials rushed to the spot for initiating a rescue operation. However, it was possible on their part as more than 10 elephant were found surrounding the wounded elephants, said sources.
