Ahmedabad, Mar 25: In a major crackdown on gold smuggling, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad seized gold worth over Rs 2.77 crore and detained two individuals in this connection.
The accused passengers, whose identities have not been disclosed yet, were arriving from Abu Dhabi when they were caught concealing gold inside their jeans.
As per reports, the AIU officials were carrying out routine inspection when they spotted that the passengers were behaving suspiciously and conducted a thorough check.
During the search, the officials recovered approximately 3,050 grams of gold. The detainees had also mixed the gold with chemicals in a semi-liquid form to evade detection. Apart from the gold bars, two gold chains and coins were also recovered from the possession of the suspects.
Officials are investigating where the smuggled gold came from and who it was meant for. They are also checking if the suspects are part of a bigger smuggling group.
Notably, Gujarat has seen many gold smuggling cases in recent years, showing the state's ongoing fight against illegal activities.
