Girls above 9-year in Odisha to get anti-cancer jabs

Bhubaneswar, Aug 14: The Odisha government is planning to administer anti-cancer jabs to girls in the state 9 to 13 age group. The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, which prevents cervical cancer, will be provided free of cost to girls in the 9 to 13 age group in high schools of 10 aspirational districts soon. The National Health Mission (NHM) has approved a budget of Rs 10 crore for the anti-cancer shot in its project implementation plan (PIP) for 2022-2024, said NHM mission director Shalini Pandit. The vaccine is currently available in three brands, varying between Rs 600 to 1,000 per dose. Doctors recommend two doses of the vaccine. The second dose will be administered after six to 12 months after the first one. In the two years the vaccination drive will be conducted in Balangir, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput.
