Kathmandu (Nepal), Sept 12: Former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki is all set to take oath as the interim Prime Minister at 8.45 PM today, sources said.
The decision to appoint 73-year-old Sushila Karki as the head of the interim government comes after protesters engaged in marathon talks with the Nepalese Army and President Ram Chandra Poudel.
Following these discussions, the protesters' demands to dissolve Parliament and appoint Karki as the interim Prime Minister were accepted.
It is worth noting that Karki began her legal career in 1979 as an advocate in Biratnagar and gradually advanced through the ranks, ultimately becoming a Supreme Court justice in 2009. In 2016, she made history by becoming Nepal's first female Chief Justice, a milestone achieved alongside women holding the country’s top three positions—President, Speaker of Parliament, and Chief Justice.
The breakthrough comes after days of deadly protests led by the country's Gen Z, which ultimately resulted in the toppling of KP Sharma Oli's government.
Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday (September 9) following widespread anti-government protests and fled from the country.
Demonstrators attacked the private residences of several top politicians, including President Ramchandra Paudel, and set the parliament building on fire.
The student-led protests highlighted the growing public anger towards the political establishment over various issues, including a social media ban and allegations of corruption.
Despite curfews and a heavy presence of security forces, demonstrators gathered in the heart of Kathmandu and other areas, showing their defiance and frustration.
