Hyderabad, Jan 18: The security forces on Tuesday eliminated four cadres of the outlawed CPI in Mulugu district of Telangana, close to Chhattisgarh border.
Acting on a tip-off regarding the presence of the Maoists in Karragatta forest in Venkatapuram (Nuguru) mandal, the security forces launched a combing operation.
As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where the red rebels were hiding, they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered an encounter in which four Maoists were gunned down.
Divisional level leaders of CPI (Maoist) were suspected to be among those killed. The officials have recovered arms and ammunition including an INSAS assault rifle from the encounter site.
In the gun-fight, a constable of the Greyhounds (a police special forces unit of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Police departments) was also injured. He was airlifted to Hanamkonda, where he was admitted to a hospital.
The joint combing operations by the police of both the states continued in the forest area amid reports of presence of top Maoist leaders in the region.
