Bhawanipatna,Feb13: Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary in Kalahandi has now become a death trap for elephants. Four female elephants were found dead in suspicious condition within twelve days.
On February 1, a big female elephant’s body was spotted in the core forest of Karlapat sanctuary. In the mean time, bodies of three more elephants were recovered from the sanctuary from three separate places.The second one was found on February 8 while the third body was traced by elephant trackers on February 10. Forest officials found fourth body of the elephant on February 12 a few kilometre away in the same wildlife range. Significantly all the dead elephants are females.
Expressing concern over it, Divisional Forest Officer(DFO), Kalahandi T Ashoke Kumar has asked for a probe into it. However, he suspects septicaemia as the cause behind elephants’ death.
On the other hand, the government has initiated a high level investigation by a specialized team headed by Professor of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). The medical team has visited the spot today. The team will examine the samples of the elephants soon.
