Bhubaneswar, June 19: In a significant development, Odisha Vigilance sleuths have arrested Akrura Majhi, the former Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) of Saramuli Gram Panchayat under the Daringbadi Block in Kandhamal district, for allegedly embezzling government funds amounting to ₹53,38,809. Majhi is set to be produced before the court today.
According to official reports, the alleged embezzlement occurred during Majhi's tenure as PEO between October 31, 2023, and November 18, 2024. A verification conducted by Odisha Vigilance revealed that Majhi had falsely recorded the execution of various developmental works in the cash book and misappropriated funds that were allocated for projects under the 15th Central Finance Commission (CFC) and the 5th State Finance Commission (SFC) grants.
Following the investigation, Majhi was arrested and forwarded to the Special Judge, Vigilance, in Phulbani. A case has been filed against him under Berhampur Vigilance PS Case No. 8/18.6.2025. Majhi has been charged under Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and Section 316(5) of the BNS, for allegedly embezzling government funds.
The Odisha Vigilance team is continuing its investigation into the matter, gathering crucial evidence to strengthen the case against Majhi. The authorities are determined to ensure that the accused faces appropriate legal action for the alleged misappropriation of public funds.
This arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing fight against corruption in the state, as Odisha Vigilance intensifies its efforts to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in the misuse of government resources.
