Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: Odisha Forest department is all set to conduct DNA profiling of Tigers, said Principal Conservator of Forests(PCCF), Sashi Paul on Thursday. Acting on the rampant poaching of tigers from Odisha forests, Paul said, DNA profiling of tigers will facilitate the identification of tigers from their hide. Database on the tigers' genome can determine the location and origin of the tiger so that the poachers can be ascertained for conviction, Paul said. Accordingly, the forest officials will be trained on how to undertake tiger census and collect samples of tigers for DNA profiling. At the same time, in order to keep a vigil on tigers, additional forest staff will be appointed in forests having more tigers or leopards in the habitats. Worth mentioning, forensic scientists have recently discovered the DNA mechanism for the tigers so as to trace out the origin and nature of the tigers and save the wild cat before going extinct.
