Floods hit Jajpur as Baitarani River overflows; 600 affected

Jajpur, July 28: Continuous rainfall has caused the Baitarani river to overflow, triggering severe flooding in Odisha's Jajpur district and affecting around 600 people across 150 households in four villages, officials said.

The district administration launched evacuation and relief operations in the affected areas under Dashrathpur and Jajpur blocks. Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Sibanand Swain confirmed that the situation is under control as water levels are now receding. No casualties have been reported.

“The water had risen significantly, but the situation is now stable. We’ve evacuated residents from the four affected villages and provided them with food and other relief materials,” said ADM Swain.

The administration had issued a flood alert on Saturday after the Baitarani river crossed the danger mark at Akhuapada.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for Monday, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning in several districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and others.

The IMD also warned of squally winds reaching speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, over the North Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh between July 26 and 29.
