Balasore, Mar 9: In a major crackdown, at least five tons of beef were seized from a truck near Putura Chowk on the Basta-Baliapal road in Odisha’s Balasore on Sunday.
As per reports, some Bajrang Dal workers tried to intercept the truck by blocking the road near Gandhi Chowk under Basta police station on National Highway No. 16 when it was heading towards West Bengal from the Bhadrak.
However, the truck was unable to enter the highway and attempted to take a detour through Baliapal road.
The truck, traveling at high speed, crashed into a tree near Putura Chowk due to dense fog and came to a stop. The driver and helper abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
Upon getting the information, Singla police arrived at the spot and seized the truck before taking it to the police station.
Locals claimed that hundreds of cattle and beef trucks are smuggled to West Bengal via the highway every day. Both residents and Bajrang Dal workers have urged authorities to take swift action against those responsible.
