Jammu, August 26: A landslide triggered by incessant rainfall claimed five lives and left 14 others injured on Tuesday afternoon along the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred around 3 pm near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, approximately halfway along the 12-km trek to the revered hilltop shrine.
Following the tragedy, the pilgrimage to the shrine was immediately suspended. The Himkoti trek route had already been closed earlier in the day due to heavy rains, and the old route was halted around 1:30 pm as a precautionary measure.
Rescue operations are currently underway at the site. Authorities said three days of relentless downpour have caused widespread disruption across Jammu, heightening the risk of such disasters.
