Malkangiri, May 23: A major fire broke out at the Machkund Hydro Electric Project after the plant reportedly tripped between 11:30 am and 12 noon on Friday. Following the technical snag, flames engulfed several project cables, triggering panic inside the premises.

On noticing the blaze, employees rushed out of the project area for safety. However, a few workers remained trapped on the turbine floor amid thick smoke. In a daring rescue operation, some staff members risked their lives to evacuate their trapped colleagues safely.

Several employees reportedly suffered breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation and are currently undergoing treatment. Further details regarding the extent of damage are awaited.
