Fine collection under new MV Act triggers mob fury

Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police today resorted to lathicharge to disperse people who stopped a police vehicle and asked the cops engaged in checking vehicles under the new Motor Vehicle Act near Rajmahal Square here and asked them to produce documents.

The aggrieved people mobbed traffic police personnel and asked them to show documents of their (police) van. Tension ran high as the police personnel refused to do so and went on collecting fines instead.

As per reports, the Commissionerate Traffic police was conducting checking as part of the new MV Act at Rajmahal Square. At around 1 pm, thousands of locals gheraoed the on-duty police personnel protesting the challan alleging that the traffic cops were checking the documents of vehicles by parking those on the road allegedly in violation of the new traffic rules.

Then the irate mob asked the cops to produce valid documents of the police vehicle and the licence of the driver. After police failed to show those to public, the mob wanted to know on what morality they were checking helmets and other documents from the commuters.

On being informed, Commissioner of Police Sudhanshu Sarangi, DCP Anup Sahoo rushed to the spot. Police also resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police said that police are now looking five violations – three people riding the motorcycle, helmets, riding against traffic flow, drunk driving and use of mobile phone during driving.
