Bhubaneswar: Odisha Rasagola on Monday finally got a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai.
GI is a name or sign used on certain products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin.
The Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC) and Utkal Mistanna Byabasayee Samiti will be the registered holder of Odisha Rasagola’s GI tag now.
The development came a year after West Bengal walked away with (GI) tag recognition for Benglar Rasgulla.
It is pertinent to mention here that, a massive social and political outcry erupted in the State in 2017 after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced GI tag for Benglar Rasgulla.
Registered as ‘Odisha Rasagola’ by the Geographical Indication Registry, the certificate that was issued today will be valid till February 22, 2028.
The Odisha Rasagola is associated with the world famous 12th century Jagannath Temple, Puri. As per the age-old rituals, Lord Jagannath offers Rasagola to His wife Goddess Lakshmi on the occasion of Niladri Bije.
