Fighting COVID-19: BMC’s noble venture to feed stray animals in city from tomorrow

Bhubaneswar, March 31: As the entire world population has been badly hit by the lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, the stray animals on the streets are also suffering a lot. In order to address the difficulties of the stray animals a massive plan to feed the stray stray dogs, bulls and cows from April 1.

Announcing the noble venture BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary today said the initiative will continue till the lockdown is in force. This will enable the stray animals immensely to get food during the Corona pandemic.

For this BMC has formulated an SOP guidelines which were devised by deputy commissioner Shyam Sunder Sethi and will ensure preparation of food worth Rs 20,000 every day for dogs, bulls and cows. As the stray dogs and bulls/cows form the major chunk of the animal population Rs 12,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively will be spent for dogs and bulls/cows respectively.

For this noble gesture of the State Government the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department has granted Rs 3.60 lakhs for food only. Other expenses, if any, would be met by BMC.

In this work BMC will be assisted by veterinarian doctors, officials and staff and NGOs working for animal welfare.

However, any organisation desiring to take part in this work cannot distribute the food to stary animals directly. The SOP has asked to contact the deputy commissioner concerned to take part in the programme.

It can be mentioned here that the city currently has got more than 1,500 bulls and more than 40,000 stray dogs.
