Bhubaneswar, June 17: Capital Police have busted a father-daughter fraud racket that allegedly duped job aspirants by promising employment in the Railways. The accused, identified as Vidyadhar Das and his daughter, have been arrested for cheating people of lakhs of rupees.
According to police, Vidyadhar operated a tea stall at Unit-I Market in Bhubaneswar. Investigations revealed that he projected his daughter as a Railway employee and lured unemployed youths with promises of securing jobs in the department in exchange for money.
Victims were allegedly asked to deposit the money into the daughter's bank account. One complainant, Nrusingha Charan Sahu, alleged that the accused had demanded ₹20 lakh for arranging a Railway job.
Ironically, Vidyadhar himself had earlier fallen victim to a fraud. Based on his complaint, two persons were arrested just a week ago. However, police said the incident allegedly inspired him to launch a similar scam with his daughter.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the duo cheated several people and collected nearly ₹25 lakh through the fraud. Police are continuing their probe to ascertain the exact amount involved and identify other victims linked to the racket.
