Extramarital affair leads to double murder and arrest of former Odisha MLA Anup Sai; sequence of events

Raigarh, Feb 14: Chhattisgarh police cracked the double murder case and arrested former MLA of Odisha Anup Sai. Though the murder took place in May 2016, it took nearly four years to crack the case. Here is the sequence of events leading to the arrest of Anup Sai May 2016 - Bodies of a woman and a girl was found in a forest in Raigrah district. The faces of the victims were crushed to conceal their identity. 2017- Police conducted investigation in six states i.e. in Odisha, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bengal to identify the victims. Finally, a cousin of the woman living in Odisha identified both the bodies. The victims were identified as Kalpana Das (32) and her daughter Babli (12) 2018 and 2019 - Police went through the detailed call records of the victims and found involvement of former MLA Anup Sai. Police continued to summon Sai seeking his appearance for interrogation, but Sai allegedly used his political clout and did not appear before the police. Feb 13, 2020 - Police picked up Sai from his residence and interrogated him at the Chakradhar Nagar police station. Sai was removed from the post of Chairman of Odisha State Warehousing Corporation (OSWC) and later expelled from BJD. Feb 14, 2020- Police formally announced arrest of Sai and claimed that extramarital affair with the woman was the reason behind the double murder.
