Bhubaneswar, Mar 30: An engineering college in North Zone paid Rs 3 crore of holding tax which is 50% of its actual due. The institute is a defaulter and in the list of big defaulters. “Despite notice it was reluctant to pay the dues. But with the instruction of Commissioner BMC, Prem Chandra Chaudhary over the matter an case under Orissa Public Demands Recovery (OPDR) Act-1962 was lodged by the concerned Zonal Deputy Commissioner and when a team of the civic body visited the institute to seal it, the institute authority suddenly paid half of the holding tax,” said an official. The BMC later did not seal the institute as it paid half of the dues. “OPDR will be lodged henceforth after this first case of current financial year. Zonal Deputy Commissioners of each zone have been instructed for the same. Defaulters need to pay in their old price applied to them,” said Srimanta Mishra, Deputy Commissioner (revenue).
